Question about ECs

Wow, I thought I had pretty solid extracurriculars, but now I see people with lists of 10-15+.

Are these people lying? For any of you who have this many ECs, how do you do them all? How do you stay comitted to all of them? Or do you just do them once and add them to your list?
I feel like it's more important to have a deep comittment to a few ECs rather than a huge list of things you've only done once or twice.

Please help me out because it seems like it's not humanly possible to do what a lot of people here claim they do.

You shouldnt have more than 6 ECs in your list. Adcoms want passion in ECs, not a laundry list.

Yeah I agree with you both. I have about 6-7 ECs and people on here posted that that was weak, subpar, and barely mediocre. What those ppl didn't understand was how deep my commitment was to many of those activities, esp. since I play 2 instruments its not easy to do a lot of extra stuff besides. Don't worry, some ppl on here might be lying or just doing too much. The best candidates for selective colleges are the ones who are passionate, and its impossible to be about 15+ ECs...unless you don't sleep

there are only so many hours in a day

I have a long list of ECs but Im not lying. How do I manage? 5-6 hours of sleep a night plus lots of stress but I really have fun with all my ECs. It may look like a laundry list to some, but its definately not made up. As for passion and deep commitment, I have invested as much time energy and effort into my ECs as possible.

If you want to see my list, you can look at the thread i started in the chances forum.

and also, i have to admit, my social life on weekends is very minimal. definately no time to go out and do any hardcore "partying"

I know several people who've gotten into Ivies and other prestigious schools with ECs that people on these boards would glance at and dismiss as "weak" or "mediocre". It's ridiculous: the time and the commitment is a lot more impressive than the length of the list. Your ECs are probably fine.

Wow thanks a lot...That's a nice relief.

I wouldn't give them a laundry list. But a grocery list, that's another story. AND yes, many people lie.(even if just a little)
