I'm learning my ensemble audition music and will have to audition for band the first week of classes. I'm a freshman...do college ensemble auditions usually have a recording of the rest of the band and you play with that, or just by yourself? I know it could depend on the school, but I was wondering if there is a general norm on this at all. The 2 required pieces are both band music and have sections where my instrument doesn't play at all.

At son’s school this fall, he was given the whole piece and then 6 excerpts from it of which he’ll be asked to play 3. No accompaniment.

You should expect to play by yourself. I have never heard of ensemble auditions with accompaniment. Even when musicians audition for top symphony jobs, they play unaccompanied.

You will probably be asked just for excerpts of the pieces (e.g. “Please start at letter C and play through to the beginning of E” or “Give us measures 19 to 48 first.”)
