Do you have to audition if you play an instrument?

I’m not all too familiar with US colleges.

Anyhow, if you say that you play a certain instrument, and/or you say you won many awards for it, etc., do the colleges ask that you audition, as in play the instrument in front of some ‘judges’ to show just how good you are?

Or do you not have to prove how good you are, at all?

<p>It is optional unless you are applying to that school as a music performance major. Once you're admitted, however, you do have to audition for ensembles and such.</p>
