Just wondering will all finalists receive a notification of their status even if they don't win any award? If not when is it time to give up hoping?

All semifinalists should have received notification as to whether or not they are finalists by now. Corporate awards were mailed beginning March 9 or so, so all corporate award recipients should have heard by now. Winners of $2500 awards are being notified beginning today, if I recall correctly. Winners of college-sponsored awards will be officially notified by NM beginning in April, although it is possible that colleges will send notifications of their own. I believe that finalists who do not receive any official NM scholarships will not be notified that they aren’t receiving any.

Thanks Schokolade! I guess son can still hope for a letter regarding his first choice college result till April then:)

I seem to recall reading that NMSC would notify Finalists who would not receive any awards in May.

Within two or three weeks you will know if you have won a corporate or NMSC’s own award. If you have not won either, your only chance will be the school award. For that you should have notified the school choice and school should have given the award. In other words, you should have a pretty good idea if you are going to receive an award in about 2-3 weeks time. School awards do take time to come but if you have chosen the school and know the rules, you will have an idea.

As I have mentioned many times, every NMF is a winner. Just because you did not get an award is no reflection on you. Not every parent works for a large corporation. You may choose a school that does not give NMF awards. And NMSC awards are both limited and state proportionate. A person in WY may get an award while someone in MA with the same profile may not. Again you cannot be blamed for your choice of state.

Some schools give awards to all NMF’s who make that school their first choice. So if you child’s school is one of those, your son has got an award.

For others, schools often mention their policy to make awards (first come first served, 50 scholarships etc). Call the school if you want.

Yup, my son’s first choice college gives out limited awards and it’s mentioned in the school website that it is competitive so it’s not guaranteed.

D1 received notification in the mail today from U of Minnesota that she had been awarded their “official” college-sponsored NMSC $1K-$2K/year scholarship (only $1K in our case, but we’ll still take it!!). Good to know early that she’ll be getting that extra money. Now we just have to wait for the letter from NMSC sometime in April.
