Question about Financial Aid notifications

My S applied to a few colleges and over half of them have accepted him. So I am wondering, when will he get the financial aid package where they tell him what his out of packet amount would be?

I know he has to decide by May 1st, and his decision would be highly depending on the financial aid awarded to him.

If the acceptances came recently, the FA packages should be soon.

Are these schools that promise to meet need?

Well he has been accepted to:

Georgia Tech
Purdue
Penn State
UF
University of Texas
U of Illinois

he is still waiting on:
Rice
Princeton
Carnegie Mellon
U Michigan
Northwestern

Most of those state schools don’t meet need and are not generous to OOS students.

Which public is he “in-state” for?

What are his stats? (that can make a difference). What is your EFC?

Which school is his financial safety (the school that you can afford to send him to)?

Well, let me start with, we live in Florida, (UF) would be our safety.

His states are: GPA 3.7 UW/ 4.7 W
SAT 2300, ACT 34
AP’s 3 (5’s) 2 (4’s)
In the IB program
National Merit Finalist
Member of the honor society
Four year in marching band (Section Leader)
Three years in model UN (President)

Our EFC is over 100K

I know it he would only qualify for Merit Based.

I forgot to mention that he is Hispanic. I don’t know if that maters though.

Great stats…he should get some merit from some of those schools.

Hmmmmm …did you submit a FAFSA?

Since he’d only qualify for merit, would he even get a FA package? We never got one (but we never submitted a FAFSA, either, because our EFC was too high). We got Scholarship letters, but not FA packages.

Being Hispanic will help for Princeton, NU, and CM, but it may not help for the others. I assume that you know you won’t get merit/aid from Princeton. I don’t know if NU gives merit.

Have you received any scholarship letters yet?

Sorry for the misspelling, you could tell that he doesn’t get the smarts from his mom.

Yes, I did submit the FAFSA to all those schools. I thought I should try it just in case.

He was a semi finalist to the Presidential scholarship at GA. He went thru the interview process and was not selected. But I know it is very difficult.

His favorite schools are Princeton and Rice. These schools have great Engineering programs, but they are very expansive also and I have two other kids to put thru college so unfortunely if he doens’t get any help from any he will have to go to UF.

He was invited to Rice for the Vision 2010 this year and loved the school.
But he has not herd yet if he is in.

Hmmm…Rice will likely accept him and hopefully give him some good merit! His stats are awesome!

Did he apply to any schools that will give him assured merit? I realize UF will give him something for NMF, but did he apply to any other schools that will give him assured big merit for his stats?

I still think he has a good chance for Princeton, but it sounds like that won’t be affordable.

If he gets into princteon, the FA is very good with incomes under $180k

^^^
I think their income/assets is higher than that based on her stated EFC. People whose EFCs exceed the $99k max have incomes (or high assets) that put them over that $180k threshold.

So, What I was wondering is, in April when he gets his letters from Princeton and/or Rice, if he get in, is that when he will receive a letter from the Financial Aid office?

If he doesn’t get it at that time, then should he assume that he will not get anything from the university?

I did double check and the EFC and it’s 95K.

If your son gets accepted to Rice and/or Princeton, then the FA packages will come at the same time or shortly after. (I’m not sure what each school’s policy is…but there shouldn’t be a big lag time between spring acceptance and FA info.)

I would imagine that if your son doesn’t get any FA at that time, he won’t be getting any…with a $95k EFC, that suggests an income in the $250-325k range (or very high assets). However, Rice can be generous with merit. Are you aware of any scholarships that he might be considered for? Have you asked Rice when they notify those who’ve been given merit awards?

No, I haven’t call Rice about any scholarships. Do you think I should?

I would call and ask **when **and **how **scholarships are awarded. I’d ask if they come under separate cover or in FA awards.

I don’t know how Rice does theirs…do they only do university awarded scholarships? Do they also have department scholarships? If so, how and when are those awarded?

I don’t see anything wrong with a politely-worded and respectful phone call just seeing info.

I will call, thank you so much for your help.
