Can I approach the question as "Imagine you are an inventor - what would you invent and who would it impact?" as opposed to imagining myself as Benjamin Franklin? I am having a hard time figuring out what "imagining myself as Ben Franklin" means.

Can others let me know what approach they took/are taking on the question?

at the interview my son asked if it meant it had to be something Franklin was interested in or relative to the time frame. Answer: absolutely not. They are looking for a well articulated, thoughtful answer that shows you gave the essay some attention and allows you to express an aspect of your personality or an interest.

My daughter imagined herself as an inventor, not as Benjamin Franklin. She was admitted ED so that approach certainly didn’t hurt her application.

I’m a current student, and I believe the College simply wants to make sure you realize how versatile Franklin was. He was not only an inventor but much more. You should take that into account when answering.
