Question about housing

Ok, so I live in SD already and silly me thought it would be a good idea to keep living in my house and just commute to school every day.

Turns out it is way more annoying and difficult than I expected. It takes a good 30+ minutes each way, and that's without heavy traffic. I really, really, regret this decision. Plus I kinda feel cheated of the college experience and all that jazz now.

Unfortunately I turned down the loans I was offered by the school to cover housing (because I didn't want to be in debt) and I didn't apply for a housing contract.

I realize I might have to live with this decision for the rest of freshman year, but the question is: is there anything I can do? Ways to get money to cover housing, now that I can't get those loans? And even then, is there any possible way to still get housing for 2009-2010?

I realize this is probably unrealistic.

Another question- how would I apply for housing next year? I don't have guaranteed housing anymore, so what exactly is the process? Am I put on a waitlist, or something? Do people with guaranteed housing have some priority?

I don’t know about the loan situation, but the waitlist for Winter '10 housing opens up on November 2, 2009 so you could potentially get housing for next quarter :)

If they offered you loans initially, you can still get them. Contact Financial Aid and explain your situation. Especially if you are eligible for Stafford subsidized or unsubidized loans from the federal govt. – you are entitled to them. for freshman, I believe the limits are 3500 for subsidized (must be Pell eligible) and $ 2,000 for unsubsidized for a total of 5500. You get these loans from a bank – one recommended through UCSD – even though the funding comes from the Federal govt.

Oh, interesting… I didn’t know about that.

Wow, really? Thanks for the info.
