Question about in-state

So I am the daughter of a now retired military family. My father was in the military for about 20 years and retired in Guam in 2008. During/After his retirement, my family moved to Florida. My parents divorced about a year later and my Dad moved up to Illinois. Back in January of this year (2012), my mom moved me from Florida to California because of a job offer.
So what is my state of residency?

Is it Florida? If so, would I be able to still apply/qualify for bright futures?
Or is it California, in which case I should have an easier time getting into a UC?

You need to look at the residency requirements for UC, your California community college, and your Florida options. They can all be different.

Will you graduate from high school in California? This year? Next year?

(Also, might there be GI benefits that are transferable to you?

The military service might also throw some (helpful) twists into the residency issue – but I don’t know the ins and outs of that.

I am a rising senior so I will be graduating from high school this school year in California. My counselor said that I should qualify for residency, but she wasn’t to sure.

Would having my mom register to vote in California help?
Right now I am just trying to figure out what my (financial) safety schools are.

Seems to me that you will have resided in CA for well over a year when you graduate from a CA high school in June 2013. That being the case, you would not any longer be a resident of Florida. I believe you would be a CA resident.

Would that count for when I apply (around October 2012)?

YYou would need to check California residency requirements for the colleges you are applying to…but I though residency was 12 months or more prior to the start of college.

One year in CA seems to satisfy UCB’s requirement for residency. [Legal Residence Information - Office Of The Registrar](http://registrar.berkeley.edu/legalinfo.html)

But is that one year by the time you apply, or one year by the time you plan to enroll?

You have to file a Statement of Legal Residence (SLR) by May 1 prior to fall semester. The one year is determined when you file the SLR. Since you have lived in CA less than 3 years, you will have to provide documentation with your SLR form. The dates on the documentation will be important.

Types of documentation they are looking for (you don’t have to have every one):
