I read the essay they sent out that upset some people. I, however, adore this essay and think that U of C may be an amazing place. I've decided to apply but it's so last minute that while they would get all of my application stuff, they wouldn't receive my high school transcript, guidance counselor letter, or teacher recommendations for about another week. Would they still accept my application? Thanks

I imagine they probably still would. But get on those essays buddy. They’re tough! I’ve got 2 more to go till freedom. Procrastination is my downfall.

I think you should be fine…

I was going to make a seperate post, but I’ll just ask it here.
In my extended essay I make a reference to Fight Club (more specifically, the rules). I was under the impression that it’s a really well known pop culture reference but my mom disagrees with me. Do you think the adcoms will get it?

well, I’d imagine so, although I’ve actually never seen Fight Club, so I don’t know.

I would be shocked if any of the adcoms haven’t seen fight club. If they haven’t, they can probably do a quick google search and find out what you’re talking about. It’s a pretty common reference.

@OP they will. THey usually take 1-2 weeks to get sorted with EVERYTHING, and plus I think supplementary stuff (records, transcript, recs) aren’t due until the next two weeks ( don’t quote me on this).

@The other poster: They should. Even I have not watched it and get the reference.

Yeah as long as you submit what you’re responsible for by the deadline, they don’t care. They’ll be sorting out mail for the next few weeks anyway.

And definitely go for the Fight Club reference. Someone is bound to have seen it, and it’s a movie that makes you think. It’s very UChicago (and just happens to be my favorite movie).

Fight Club is a good idea, and the adcoms should catch the reference. As my girlfriend says, Fight Club is “Marx in the voice of Brad Pitt.”

@mynameisrose: just a suggestion, but if you’re specifying where the reference is from you might want to use the book instead of the movie… I just kind of have a gut feeling there. For example, if you were going to reference Harry Potter (off the top of my head) would you reference the movie, or the book?

@confusedliz: Good luck, I actually decided to apply there last minute also so hopefully we’ll both get in!
