Just a list?

Hey guys,
I was filling in the essays for UChicago, and I came across the question that asks you for some of your favorite books, music, movies etc. Do we just list them? Like this:

Movies
-X
-Y
-Z

Music
-X
-Y
-Z

like that? I'm confused!

btw, onemore question, if I have my recs and all in by Thursday of this week in the mail, and then submit essays online on like December 23rd, is that too late?

I think you can do whatever you want. If you think your list is effective, go for it. Most write out an essay, though.

I'd say make sure your essay says something about you. I changed mine from an essay of random things to just talking about one of my favorite bands. I think it was a lot more effective that way.

When I say make it say something about you, i don't mean that directly. Think of it this way: will your list/essay stand out from other applicants' essays? What are you using it to tell them besides just what you like?

NO list!!! no list no list no list!

from the app: "Respond to Questions 1 and 2 by writing a paragraph or two for each question."

And yes, the dates you have should be more than early enough. Keep in mind January 2nd is a postmark/submission deadline, not a receipt deadline.

You can list them with a short paragraph after each one if you want, though. I did so and was admitted last year. I wonder how this essay is used by the admissions committee. Maybe they want to weed out people who have dull interests.

Actually, I went against your advice and ended up using that essay on that one movie.

The format that I used to get accepted was to make an initial short listing for one or two sentences followed by a detailed description and analysis of one particularly important movie/book/musician for the remainder of the paragraph. This is after all, an essay question so listing x,y,zs and 1,2,3s probably isn't a good idea; use complete sentences.

I don't think that a list - without explanation - would be a good idea this year.
