My father and mother both graduated from NYU and UPenn respectively… So that makes me a legacy student in each; however, they both graduated graduate school (MBA and Masters in social work). Does that make me no longer a legacy student or what exactly?
Depends on the school. Some like Columbia only consider legacy if your parents went to the undergrad school. Others like Duke give extra consideration to all legacies (even graduate school).
It also is important to note that your parents must be actively involved in the alumni association or in some other way with the school. Simply being a legacy to a parent who has never attended any events or contributed any money may not help much at all. But on the other hand if your parents are extremely involved in class reunions, alumni admissions, volunteer as mentors, etc then this may help more. It also doesn’t hurt if your parents have a big wallet and contribute.
Graduate schools don’t have as much weight as undergrad legacy does
My mother is not active at all… But my father is very active; he is the head of the alumni of stern in middle east and attends all events giving open speeches and whatnot… He does not have money to donate however…
