Hey all,

I have questions about how LORs are handled for grad schools.

(1) Some schools ask for LORs to be included WITH the apps...how is that done? Do profs send their LORs to the student and then the student uploads them with that app??

(2) Some schools send the profs a notification, so I guess I just provide those schools contact info...right?

(3) Do some schools just want you to give your profs their school addresses and the profs send the LORs directly to the school?

(4) I'm applying to about 10 or so grad schools, so is this going to require each prof to do a lot of work?

(5) I've talked to a few profs who've said that they will write my LORs....should I give them a copy of my resume for them to refer to?

Different schools handle LoRs in different ways, so you may end up with a combination of all of the above methods.

When you include LoRs with the application, it’s done physically. Your recommender has to mail you the letter in a sealed envelope, then you include that sealed envelope in your packet. That method is a serious pain.

It is generally helpful to provide your recommenders with your resume/c.v. and your statement of purpose. That way, they can best tailor the letter to your program of interest.

1) See above. Often the prof will just email you to come pick up the sealed envelopes. And see #3 below.
2) Exactly.
3) Yes. Some universities also have a LOR service where the profs send the LORs to the office and you tell the office where to send 'em. Check with your school’s career services.
4) Not really. It’s part of their job description anyway.
5) Yes and see above. When you talk with them, be sure to dicusss you list of schools. They may well have some additional ideas as well as being able to clue you in to places where you have no chance.

Good Luck!
