what are their advantages compared to regular colleges?

More intimate teaching experience, less TAs if any at all, classes are usually smaller. Less emphasis on grades and more emphasis on learning.

what is TA?

teaching assistants, usually grad students that teach INSTEAD of professors

Also there is a sort of upside/downside to research opportunity: one is not competing with grad students for positions, but there are generally fewer major projects being done.

I'm headed to an LAC next year, and I know that the overall small size was a plus for me, however I also know many people who would feel stifled at a place with 1500 students...so something like that is really dependant on personal perspective.
