What exactly is a LAC?

A Liberal Arts College

it was said long ago that arts liberate the mind. as you free your mind to form your point of view, you also develop the abilities to influence others to see the same, when the time comes that you would like or need to do so. LACs are wonderful places for young kids to become young adults.

how are classes like at a LAC? do professors and/or students do research? are lectures and discussion sections a lot better/more productive than at a big university?

Most classes at your typical LAC are like small, discussion-oriented seminars. The professors tend to be very stimulating, engage you in your education, are willing to offer help , and sometimes even exchange home phone #'s. The flipside is that if you didn't do the required reading before class, it definetely shows! And yes, at LAC's you have a much better chance of doing a one-on-one research project under the tutelage of a professor. Rarely, if ever, do TA's teach classes (even intro classes), although they might be there to assist you in the lab.

At large lecture halls at big schools like Penn State, there is little to no interaction between profs and students (except at PSU's uberselective Shreyer's Honor's College and upper-level classes), and often a graduate TA does the teaching while the prof is busy doing research or writing a grant or whatever. If you miss class, there will be no one to "check up" on you.
