Question about major courses at UCLA

Hi:

I am thinking about majoring in International Development Studies at UCLA. Does anyone know how many units this major requires to complete the BA? Is it possible to take classes in other disciplines outside of the major, such as classes in the English dept. or Film School, while working towards my degree in IDS?

I appreciate your help!

I majored in IDS.

You only have 4 classes in actual Development studies. All the other classes come form different disciplines, they are limited to things related to development but you have a TON of leeway. There are some film classes you can take that will satisfy major requirments, i took one of them. In regards to the film school, there are few classes that are actually open for enrollment of non film majors.

<a href="http://www.international.ucla.edu/study.asp%5B/url%5D">http://www.international.ucla.edu/study.asp</a>
explore that website, to the right you can see the major worksheet which outlines all the classes necessary for the major.

This is a great major to double major with.

Thanks so much for your response. Can you tell me a little bit more about your experience majoring in IDS? Also how big were the classes during your jr. and sr. years at UCLA? Did you have a chance to interact with your teachers? What are job prospects like for IDS majors? Do most go on to get grad. degrees?

Hope I haven't overwhelmed you! Thanks again for your response.

Class size will depend on what class you choose to fullfill your requirements. The ids major has few classes required anyways, the main courses will have 100-200 students, the discussion sections are small, the 1 required seminar is limited to 25 students.
If you choose to take courses like Sociology 101 to cover one of the requirements your class size will be HUGE, if you chose some more obscure non popular class then it will be smaller.

I did not care about interacting with teachers at all, but in my seminar courses, which i took to satifsy the Regional Requirement, it was only 17 students, the teacher was cool, and i got a rec from her. You can pretty much choose to take seminars for the regional requirements if you are interested.

Job prospects- umm go to grad school or your job sucks. I guess you could work for the State department, FBI, etc, or NGOs, but if you want to make over 30k, you have to have a Masters degree.

Travel abroad is HIGHLy recommended for the major, a lot of people also do peace corps or teach america or the like post graduation.

I dont know what most students do with their degree, this is 1 of my bachelor degrees and not the primary one, it was just a little something extra so i dont have as much need for this to make me money as someone who solely majored in it. A lot of IDS students double major.
