Ok, let's say I get a BS in Mechanical Engineering. What should I study for my master's degree? I've heard people say that getting a masters in the same thing you studied as an undergrad is a waste. Is this true? Because I wouldn't want to get a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering if it didn't provide any upward mobility.

To answer your question, in engineering, no, it’s not a waste whatsoever. Like G.P. said, though, this is a question that’s probably best considered a little later in your academic career. The “right answer” as to whether or not you should pursue a graduate degree, and if so, what you should study (you might want to go into aerospace or automotive engineering, or you might want to go into patent law, or you might want to go to business school, or you might want to do materials research, or any number of a whole lot of things that might require you to get a specialized graduate degree), will become more apparent to you as you progress through college. Meanwhile, good luck with college applications!
