Hey everyone, i’m a new user
I’m currently doing my undergraduate degree at a university in Canada. I’m going into my third year and I have to decide what type of professor I would like to become. So far, I have a 3.9/4.0 GPA (i have done a combination of anth and soc). My question is: If I wanted to become a sociologist or cultural anthropologist, what kind go grades will I need to receive in my undergraduate degree and my masters degree? I would honestly go anywhere in Canada, and would even be willing to attend graduate school somewhere else in the world (e.g., Europe) because I am very passionate about academics
Thanks everyone!
Your current grades are excellent. Generally speaking, having a 3.5+ is ideal for pursuing a PhD in those fields, although otherwise outstanding students with lower GPAs are often admitted as well. For a master’s degree, having a 3.0+ is generally a good bet.
Do you have any research experience? That is very important for an aspiring social scientist.
I do not have any… How does one get some?
You can volunteer with a professor. Check out which professors in your home department are doing research that is interesting to you, and see if they could take you on as a research assistant. If you live in a city with a lot of universities you can check nearby colleges as well.
Also, most cultural anthropology programs and some sociology programs are going to want you to have reading knowledge of 1-2 languages. Usually the requirement is that you pass a test of reading knowledge in your 3rd year of the PhD, which means that many programs want to see that you already have reading knowledge of one language and are on your way to a second by the time you are applying for the PhD. Usually the first language is some standard research language (like French or German) and the second one is applicable to your area of study, although sometimes they both vary (like an anthro scholar of India might need Sanskrit and Hindi).
