Question about NYU and choosing a major

i am tossed up between Stern and CAS as well...I am going to finish all the course requirements for Stern in spring semester, but i just don't know if i am going to be competitve enough to get into Stern...so i am kind of scared right now....because i want to get into NYU Economics program so bad.....is there a big difference between the Economics program offered in CAS and Stern? Does NYU have two economics department or something?

I have many friends over at Stern and some over at CAS majoring Econ.

If you are sure you want to get into banking, business, consulting, i recommend Stern. You have nothing to lose but everything to gain. Apply to Stern if you are sure.

Econ over at CAS is more of...theory than policy.

If you major in Econ policy over at CAS, you might be shadowed by those Sternies who majored in Econ policy when applying to jobs...

After all, it's Stern :) go for it if you are into business

thanks for the encouragement, jslee1026!!

thanks for the replies so far...

it's really not a matter of chances or having prereqs done, as I feel I'm a pretty strong applicant for Stern. I felt like Econ-Math is going to be my major anywhere else, and had heard that NYU had a good Econ and Math Dept. so figured it may be equivalent to Stern...but it sounds like most people are still saying NYU Stern's Finance is such a superior program nationally, that it is worth it to go down that path instead of getting into CAS.

I guess I'm just not wanting to lose the Liberal Arts feel for undergrad...but my minor will be in Philosophy, so I presume I should get to take enough classes outside of Stern to fulfill my minor requirements to make it not seem like I'm not solely pre-professional.

Truth is, as much as I really loved NYU and the city, if I'm accepted into another school on my list where I'd be doing Econ or Econ-Math (Wesleyan, Brown, WUSTL, etc.) then I'd be more inclined to go there just because I think I really want more of a liberal arts education with freedom, whereas Finance sounds like I'm going to be bombarded with only business courses...and I'm not sure that's what I want yet. Liberal Arts at NYU would fit me more, but if it's not worth the money (compared to Stern Finance) then I don't think I would want to turn down the opporunity if I'm accepted into Stern.
