question about office hours

when you go to the office hours of professors, what should you do if you ask the professor for help but don't understand his explanation? you ask for more clarification, but still end up being lost. What then? it would be most advisable for you to spend some time on the problem before asking his question of course, so that you can anticipate follow-up questions to the professor's response. but it seems that a lot of professors just don't seem to care that much about being clear or with helping the student to understand the material that much. (or maybe i'm overly cynical or have bad experiences with a small subset of them)

Does your college offer free tutoring/homework help services?

it does; but the courses are too high-level for tutors/homework help to cover (those catered towards frosh and sophs)

Ask the professor or department where you can get tutoring help. They probably can recommend a student whom you can pay to help you.

Also try using some alternative textbooks. They may provide easier to understand explanations.

Some people just aren't good teachers. I had one professor say, after a number of people had raised their hands and asked him to clarify the same portion of the lecture, "If you don't get it by now, you should probably not be here."

If I were you, I would see if there was another prof teaching the same subject, and ask him/her for help instead. Or, like Northstarmom suggested, get help from a student, maybe a grad student.
