Hey everyone,

I applied for a job on-campus about a week ago, which was actually the first job I ever applied for. I followed all the procedures that were asked but now it's been about 5 days without so much as a "thanks for your app, but we're taking someone else" or a "we're reviewing your application".

I don't really know what to do in this situation. Is this the norm? Is it normal to send a follow-up email asking about the application? I'd hate to be too pushy though.

Any advice is appreciated!

They’re probably just in the process of collecting applications right now, and haven’t started looking at them.

With my current job, I wasn’t notified for like a month after I applied that there was a job opening.

Most jobs you apply for, you won’t hear anything back from them. If they choose to interview you, they will let you know whether it’s a yes or no, but they usually don’t tell you it’s a no for just the application.

I might be the only one with this way of thinking, but I would send a follow-up email. When I got my first job many moons back I had to call them 3 times before I got an interview and I ended up getting the job. I think it is better to show that you are really interested in the job and just kind of whatever when it comes to a job you are seeking.

I see what both of you are saying. I think I’m going to wait another week, and if nothing happens I’ll send them an email.

Thanks for your feedback!

Another question, what exactly should I write in the feedback email? Would a simple, “could you give me information as to the status of my application?” do?

I wouldn’t word it like that, but rather something like “I applied for this job ____ weeks ago and haven’t heard back yet. I was just wondering if the position has already been filled. Thanks!”

So…it’s been two weeks and no word yet. I probably didn’t get the position, which is ok with me I’m not too bummed about it, but should I send a feedback email anyway?

I was reading something in one of my business textbooks…It says if you have not heard back from a perspective employers within one month send a follow-up later.

Would I send a follow-up email or letter? Yes.
