"Job" dilemma

Okay, well this is not actually a "job", but I applied for a position in a national high school organization made up completely of high schoolers. I even e-mailed my resume to a high schooler who will decide whether I get the position or not.

The organization says they review applications every 5 weeks. It's been more than 5 weeks and I haven't gotten any response yet.

I really want this position.
So what do you think:
Did I just not get the position and they didn't want to e-mail me back saying I got rejected? Or did they just not look at the application yet and if so, should I e-mail them in a follow-up asking them if they received it?

In any case, I am really eager to earn this position and want to do whatever will be best for me.

Thanks for your advice!

Call. You waited and it is not fair for them to keep you waiting any longer. Be professional, assertive, and concerning. Say something like "I applied for XYZ position and have not received any feedback. I would like to what the status of the decision is so that I might consider other options more seriously."

Do not let them hang up without either a) letting them know of their decision or b) when that decision will be made by. If they say No, then let it go. You probably won't even get constructive feedback as to why not. If they give you a date, call a day or two after that date if you haven't heard anything.

Having a date will allow you to call without it seeming like you are bugging them. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions. If you have a question before the decision is made call HR or the hiring manager, it's not a big deal.
