Question About Personal Statements

my question is is it okay to use vivid imagery to illustrate a certain event or experience in your life, or should you just describe it in a normal way? because using vivid imagery would help make the essay more interesting in my opinion, but my older brother, an alumni from UC Berkeley, told me that the college administrators don't want to read a "journal" so to speak. He told me that I should just write the personal statement like any other essay, like just an intro, your thesis, body paragraphs with good examples to support your thesis, and conclusion. but then from another source I heard that the personal statement is UNLIKE any other essay you have ever written in school. So I have two contradictory views on the personal statement and I have no *****ing idea which one I should follow.

Help please!

Sure, just be yourself.

i echo roxlo, the most important thing is definitely to be yourself. What you really really don't want is to come across as dry and impersonal. Make sure it sounds like your voice! I recommend Harry Bauld's book on 'writing the college admissions essay' which is small, hilarious and helps a lot.
