Question about PHY 2048: Physics with Calc 1 with Engineering Majors?

I was only accepted into the Spring 2012 Semester as a Freshman (along with 900 others lol). So all of my friends are starting now while I have to wait until beginning on January when Spring Semester starts. I am not doing CC or USF courses while I wait. I am getting a job which I am starting next week.

I will be a Computer Science Major. Ok, here's my question. All my of my friends who are doing an Engineering-like major right now are taking Chemistry right now @ UF. And I'm guessing the other Courses on the recommended tracking sheet for their major. (Obviously guessing on that).

When I come in the Spring, if I do Physics (PHY 2048) first instead of Chemistry, will I have more trouble/ a harder time with it? It says it has some Calc 1 in it. I only took up to Pre-Calc in high school so I would be taking Calculus 1 during the Spring Semester at the same time. And I just wanted at least one of my classes to match some of my friends while I'm behind a Semester.

Is this a viable option or should I should do the usual course load a Computer Science Major does their first semester based on the Tracking Sheet (Analytical Geometry & Calc 1, General Chemistry + Lab, Programming for CIS Major 1, Humanities or Social/Behavioral Science).

Thanks.

If you’ve never taken calc before, PHY2048 might be troublesome for you. They pretty much expect you to know how to do basic calculus things. If you’re friends are patient they could always help you out, however I think in this situation you’re better off just following the Tracking Sheet.

Take Chem + Calc in the Spring and Physics in the fall

I am pretty sure you CAN’T take that Physics class until you complete Calc 1. You can check on the UF course listing website to verify.

Hi-
Firstly, congratulations and if you would, please elaborate on your
Spring acceptance rather than the normal fall acceptance;
What were your stats, how and when did UF notify you regarding your
delayed entry and do you have a site that explains in detail how this delayed start works and how students are selected ?
Thanks

Calc 1 is a pre-req for PHY2048, but honestly you barely use any calc in PHY2048. There’s some basic derivatives and maybe an integral or two, but very basic stuff.

ISIS (the system that handles all your classes) might not allow you to sign-up, but you could ask the undergrad coordinator to bypass the pre-req for you. They’ll probably ask why, so be prepared to answer that.
