Basically pre dentistry is like pre med...I think u take a 4 year major and take all necessary courses for dental school, then apply for the dental schools.

I was wondering if I do rutgers biology major and do very well (over 3.5 gpa) will I have a good chance of getting into nyu college of dentistry? I know nyu dentistry is prestigious, but I would like to go to a cheap 4 year college to save money for nyu. Or would i have a better chance by doing 4 years in nyu?
Does rutgers have a good bio program?

It does NOT really matter what undergraduate schools you attend. Go to the school that will cost you the least amount of money. As long as you have a good GPA (3.5+) and good DAT scores, you have an excellent chance of getting into most of dental schools in the US, including NYU.

I am actually a pre-dental student myself who have completed all of my prerequisites at the community college. I know this will make me less competitive but I was told by many of the advisors including the one in NYU(I emailed many that as long as I do well in them as well as the upper level classes at Rutgers, I will be OK.

I have done tons of research on this topic. Trust me.
Also NYU college of dentistry applicants average GPA is only a 3.3. Well below the average GPA of other dental schools of 3.5-3.6. People often say that students who are rich but don’t have the GPA go there :)

Dude I just realize you are only 16 years old. Are you still in high school? LOL. I like how you are already thinking about this but you still have a long way to go my man.

haha yeah i wanted to do pharmacy before, but my aunt who’s a pharmacist talked me out of it and said that for 1 extra year in school, i could make a lot more money every year…
and that pharm also has a lot of stress and isn’t typically an “easy” job.

have you tried out for any dental schools?
i look online and the dental school rankings are all weird…like every one is different. but my aunt said stony brook is good? and of course harvard lol.
good luck in dental
i hear volunteering and experience (shadowing) helps in the application. is that during high school or during college?

also, is it more beneficial to do pre dentistry in a college or just a science major?

AHAHAH what a coincidence. I wanted to be a pharmacist as well but I worked as a pharmacy technician for 3 months and decided that it was NOT for me. I mean, you will make pretty good money (100k+/year) and your job is really easy(well at least in the retail business). All you do is check that all the drugs dispensed by your technicians are correct, call doctor’s office, mix some drugs occasionally, LOL. It is really boring in my opinion. You will be making more money as a dentist, but the tuition is MUCH MUCH higher in dental schools.

The earliest you can become a pharmacist is in 6 years. That is if you can get accepted into a 6 year pharmacy program in which you will spend 2 years at a regular 4 year university and then an addition 4 professional years at the pharmacy school. However, this is almost impossible unless you are a freakin genius back in high school and have 2000+ SAT scores as well as a top 10% class rank. ( I was sh1t back in HS). To be a dentist you need 4 years of undergrad and 4 years of dental school.

Well I have NOT applied to any dental schools because I need to continue on to Rutgers(I start in the spring of 2012) in order to get a bachelor’s degree.

You can pretty much major in anything you want. As long as you complete the prerequisites of the dental schools you are applying to, you will be eligible for admission. Pre-dentistry is NOT a major. It is a set of classes students usually follow in order to get into dental school. I recommend you to major in biological sciences at Rutgers or any other school you are going to(that’s what I am doing) or something that will require you to take upper level science classes like biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, etc. Dental schools like to see that you take these upper level science courses instead of just the prerequisites.

At this point don’t worry much about extracurricular activities. Just make sure your grades are sky high in undergrad. That is the most important thing. I am almost a junior in college and I have ZERO EC related to dentistry lol. I make sure that my classes come first. When you are close to applying to dental schools, you can start shadowing a dentist or do a research. Nonetheless, your grades are the MOST IMPORTANT thing.

Yes stony brook dental school is very good. One of the hardest to get into.
let me know if you have any additional questions.

Hi bottlecap1990,
I’ve known about u long time ago in Spring Transfer 2012 forum ^^, but I just realize that you want to apply to dental school minutes ago.^^.That’s great! since I also have a same goal like you.
I do a lot of research about dental schools too, so I think we can share information. ^^.
I will go to RU (school of engineering) for this spring semester.
I plan to finish prerequisites and do some upper level biology class at RU. Whenever I get 90 credits at RU and finish DAT I will start apply to dental school.

I know that there are many dental schools require the applicant to have a bachelor degree, but I think as long as we get good grades in both GPA and DAT (many schools want the students have at least 90 credits, 3/4 of credits should come from a 4 year college @_@) we are safe to apply. That’s what I think, I dont know if it’s right or wrong?

As what I’ve learned, NYU is one of the school which is really strict about community college credits. (I removed it out of my list at first @_@)

Do you think about applying to joint BA/DMD program between RU and UMDNJ (http://hpo.rutgers.edu/NJDS-1.pdf)

BTW, Anyone who are looking for anything about dental school should take a look at studentdoctor.net (cool website)
