Question about references on the Master Promissory Note.

When completing the Master Promissory Note on the federal student aid website, I am asked to put down two references:

"List two persons with different U.S. addresses who do not live with you and who have known you for at least three years. If you are a parent borrower, do not list the student.

-List two persons with different U.S. addresses who have known you for at least three years.
-The first reference should be a parent or legal guardian.
-References must have different addresses and telephone numbers.
-If the reference does not have a telephone number, enter N/A."

Since the two references can’t be someone who lives with you, but then it goes on to say that the “first reference should be a parent or legal guardian,” how should I go about this then? My dad lives with me, so I can’t list him as my first reference. On the other hand, my mom lives in another country and the reference must have a U.S. address. I have no legal guardian.

It means the two references can’t live in the same house. It’s ok to use your dad if he lives with you in the US.

You can put anyone you want. They will give you the loans even if you put people who don’t fit in the rules. They want to find you if you go off the radar after school.
