Question about Ringling College

In the portfolio requires for all the majors it states that all work must be 'original'. This will be my first time applying to college and I wanted to know if that meant that students can't submit lets say a Disney drawing because it isn't their own? Does it mean that we must come up with our own characters and make our own scripts (could we use a script that we got permission to film with?) etc? Thanks so much!

What major are you applying for?

I’m applying for the Digital Filmmaking major and i was also asking for my friend who wants to apply for the Illustration or Animation major.

I’m kind of freaking out with portfolio requirements for schools because I haven’t really done any films  I’m taking TV Prod next year but I think it’ll be too late for me to submit any of the short films for any of the schools in applying to.

Well your friend should shy away from conceptual work in their portfolio and for a lot of drawings from life for the animation major. I think I only had two conceptual pieces in mine, and they are not recommended. I just could not help myself :P. I think a Disney character would be okay if you are putting your own spin on it. I would only put it in though if it really is exceptional. If not, it can come off as simply fan art which I do not think you’d want. It is possible definitely, I agree with your concerns. It is a fine line. If you want to show me the piece somehow I can take a look at it. If he is doing an illustration portfolio he then should have both conceptual and technical work.

I wish I could give you more info on Digital Film Making, but I do not know as much about those majors. I would talk to Ringling Admissions. I’m sure they would be happy to help you. And catch them on NPD and you can show the work in question directly. Or if you email them with your question and show them the piece I’m sure they can give you a better answer than me. Contact me if your friend wants to see my CA Ringling portfolio or make sure they check conceptart.org for a bunch of them. That was what I used to apply. And you might think you won’t have enough time to produce stuff, but you will. The only major with a specific deadline is CA (though even if it is another major make sure you get your FAFSA in on time for scholarships). I thought I wasn’t going to have enough time but I was able to get more pieces than I thought. Be ready for some late nights though. I wish I could help you out more, but I’m sure someone on this forum will be much more helpful to you. Good luck. :)

Thanks so much! I’ll be sure to relay the information to my friend. Hopefully someone familiar with the Digital Filmmaking major could help me out more, I’ll take your advice to contact the school for help  again thanks!

My dd found the admissions people at Ringling to be very helpful and supportive. I would think for any major any original work would be useful, even drawings from real life to go with your film pieces for Digital Filmmaking. As for illustration, there should be lots of figure drawing (hands, bodies, faces, etc) and other drawing from life. Have you been to Ringling? If you go visit, make an appt with admissions and show your work and ask questions. If you can’t do that phone, but I would not wait until Nat. Portfolio Days to get started; you might not have enough time by then. Good luck!
