Question about scholars program

Hey guys,
I just read that you don't need to be nominated by a counselor this year anymore and all you have to do is write the additional essay on commonapp to nominate yourself. I finished writing an essay about the first topic, based on a quote "the future belongs to the discontented" but after finishing writing, I'm a little worried.

The essay I wrote is mostly about me, and the struggles II have faced in the past year (trust me, they are genuine and have by far shaped me the most in my life so far) and they relate strongly to the quote. However, it is a merit-based scholarship, so I was thinking, should I instead write the essay on something more based on my intellectual interests? I also have another subject (about a certain issue in America right now) that relates equally strongly to the essay's quote prompt, so I'm currently divided.

Should I keep my essay about my personal struggles (which relate to the quote) or write a new essay about an issue in America as it relates to the quote? I would say both are equally strong topics, but now I'm thinking the latter might be more what they're looking for because the former might be taken as a sob story and more geared towards a need-based scholarship or something.

Is it at all possible to connect your personal struggles to an intellectual interest, or an interest in service/leadership to help those who have been in your situation?
