I’m currently a sophomore and I am trying to create a spike. I have started, but I need some help gathering ideas and how to sharpen my spike for the college admissions process. I am interested in PS and government.
CURRENT ECs FOR SPIKE:
President, Founder of the Political Science Club
Class Officer in Student Council (club of 200 people – student government)
Member of Model United Nations (going to run for leadership)
Participated in international essay contests about international relations / ethics (waiting for ranking)
Possible internship on a compaign for Senate this year
Is there anything more I should do? I know that they have pages in D.C. for the government, but it’s very selective and there’s like no open spots currently.
Also, I have an interest in economics. Will I have the opportunity to study both at most top tier schools (top 40)?
I like PS & government too, but not as a major. I still know a bit about programs though! You should take a look at these EC’s:
US Senate Youth Program (USSYP) - very selective leadership program sponsored by the US Senate
Summer Pathways internship - offered at lots of government agencies including the State Dept, DOJ, etc.
NSLI-Y - foreign language study abroad program sponsored by State dept. Good if you want to go into IR.
Actually, learning any language (especially the higher-priority ones) is helpful for a career in IR.
Obviously a good idea to take AP US Government & Macro and/or Micro, if you can. You should also try to take AP Comp Gov if your school offers it, or self-study it if your school doesn't.
Debate team/speech team might be a good idea, maybe even mock trial team.
If you have an issue that you're passionate about, go for it! Write a petition, organize a march, or contact your representative. Try to make a difference in your community.
Junior State of America, Girls/Boys State (I don't know a lot about these, I know some people that have done them though)
Good luck! You absolutely don’t have to do all of those to get into a good program - just do what you’re interested in, and colleges will see your passion!
