Hi,
I am a freshman in high school and I am interested in the Senate Page Program. I was wondering what I could do to improve my chances. I am currently in Mock Trial, French Scrabble, Math Team, Science Olympiad, Golf, and I am in my school band. Next year I am planning on doing National Honors Society as well. I have a 4.125 GPA (UW) and 4 (W). What else can I do to show that I have interest in government and politics. Do I still have a chance even though I have no connections and my parents are registered democrats?
Should I apply outside of state even though I know my chances are more limited.
Also should I email my representative, because several people on College Confidential said they have and they got in? Should I email him and send the applications as well or send the email before or after?
If you could get back to me with answers and advice I will be eternally grateful.

All good ECs. There used to be a House program too, but there isn’t anymore. No need to contact Reps for the Senate program.

The best thing you can do to increase your chances of getting in is to apply as soon as possible. In my state they started doing phone interviews before the application deadline had even passed. GPA is good, but they do look at students as a whole, because a lot of very smart students apply. ECs are rather important, but so are recommendations. If you can get a combination of someone who knows you well and someone who has a public position or title, that would be for the best. If your state does a phone interview, look up common job application questions (ie. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? What is your weakness?) and think of ways to answer them that are honest, but put your strengths in the best light. Good Luck applying!
