Question about Submission of Common App

Hi!
I am submitting my Common App tomorrow for EA for one school, but not some others (RD). I haven't done the writing supplements for the RD schools yet. Will I be able to still edit the Writing Supplement/Recommender section for the RD colleges after I submit the Common App to the EA school?

From what I understand, I won't be able to edit the "Common App" section itself (with the academic info/personal essay/etc.), but I can't find any information on if it will effect the "dashboard"/"my colleges" section of the application. I don't think it will, but I don't want to mess up my application after submission. I'm sure I'm just working myself up over nothing, but I'd love to hear this confirmed, aha.

Thanks!

Once you submit the commonapp with one supplement, you will no longer be able to manipulate the commonapp. You can continue working on all your other supplements. If you need to change the commonapp, you must create a new version. This new version will be a duplicate of the one you sent, except you will be able to change things such as the essay or your activities or coursework, etc. You can have a maximum of 3 versions. The Recommender section cannot be changed once you submit the first time. For each supplement, you need to check which recommendations you wish to include in addition to the counselor recommendation which automatically goes out to every institution you apply to. Hope that answers your question.

So I can still work on the other supplements after submitting? Just wanting to confirm–I know the common app section can’t be changed unless I create a new version (which I’m hoping I won’t have to, aha)!

If that is correct, then I believe it does answer my question! Thank you very much!! Really appreciate the fast response.

The supps (writing section under each school in your dashboard, not the writing section in the main portion of the common app) are particular to each school. You can complete and submit them one at a time. You can continue to work on all supps for schools to which you have not yet submitted. You can even add more schools after submitting one or more apps.

I think you can continue to edit/make changes to the common app main section (just not its essay) as many times as you want. For instance, i’m taking the SAT2 in lit in Oct but if I don’t score as well as I’d like, i’m not including it on my EA apps. If that’s the case, I’ll take it once more in Nov and if i do score well, then I’ll add it to my common app for my RD schools (and email the results to my EA/ED schools).

niceday, you seem to be very knowledgeable about the common app. does my take sound right to you?

No, Storyweaver, your take is not all correct. Once you submit one application, the Commonapp is locked in. At this point, you can only edit supplements. To be able to edit the Commonapp (add/delete test scores) you have to create a new version.

Adding to van2010’s thought, you can create an unlimited number of versions of the common app, but only three versions of your essay. Quoting from the common app help section:

How do you create a new version?

I am interested in the answer to this too. Is there a “replicate” link?

As the others have asked, do you have to create a whole new Common App account to make a new essay for a different college, or is there another way?

I will be doing an EA, and then an RD, so I want to know if I can submit two different common app essays to each college.

Please let us know!!!

Van 2010 is either confused or not being clear. Once you submit the Common App to a particular college, it cannot be changed for that college. Maybe this is what Van 2010 is trying to say. But between submissions to different colleges, the main (non-essay) part of the Common App can be edited as often as you like, without having to create an entirely new application. Just go back and edit whatever information you want to change before you send to the next college. The essay is different. When you submit the Common App to your first college, the essay will become “locked.” You can unlock it, modify it, and send it to one or more schools a total of two times before it locks for good. So, you could have three different versions of the essay that are sent to different schools. As is noted above, the writing supplements are unique to each school and each one can be edited as much as you want before you send it to its respective school.

All this talk about new "versions” of the Common App pertains to last year’s Common App. This year’s app is completely different and, as Middkid explained, it can be edited.

So . . .

(1) Edit the common app “fill in the blanks” questions as many times as you want, whenever you want.

(2) Edit the essay by “unlocking” it: It “locks” the first time you submit it to a college. To “unlock it after that submission is complete, you click on the “unlock” button at the bottom of the essay. It remains unlocked until the next time you submit it to a college. Then it locks again. You get two “unlocks” only - so use them carefully!

@dodgersmom - Very clear and precise, thank you so much!
