I'm a freshman right now, and although I have much interest in learning languages, I didn't take a language course this year because I was too undecided: Spanish? Chinese? French? Japanese? Intro language courses are year-long endeavors so they're a big commitment (I took French and Spanish in elementary and high school, but they were joke courses, and I have only rudimentary knowledge). So I'm looking to think hard about what I which language I want to choose.

I'm thinking of applying to a summer language school because 2 months of complete immersion seems like a great way to comprehensively learn a language. I'm looking at Middlebury's summer program right now, but I'm wondering whether I should take an intro course in college first. Should I at least have a foundation to work with? Would I be getting more out of the experience if I weren't completely overwhelmed the first few weeks?
