do we have to analyze the questions in the Short Answer section of Caltech's supplement. For example when we're asked to list three books do we have to explain why these books have been meaningful to us ? Is just listing them good ?

Doesn't it specifically say NOT to overanalyze? Just listing them is fine

I have a question too:

on the activites part, we can pick what grade we did for instance science bowl. I did SB for more than 1 year, but when I tried to select, 9th, 10th, 11th adn 12th, it wouldn't save. what did you guys do in this case? list SB 4 time? that sounds alittle too much because there are only like 5 slots

I had to pick them right before I pressed "print preview"/submitted - I couldn't get it to save either, I think

ooo but on your print preview page, it has all four years selected?

yeah, like select them all by pressing ctrl+click (in case you couldnt figure that out lol) then press submit and print preview to make sure, etc.

also, check really carefully to make sure stuff isnt cut off in the pdf. stupid pdf converter cut off a lot of stuff for me, had to find ways of shortening stuff/fixing that

btw how long was your essay? the one about scientific interest. the limit is 7500char which is about 2 pages.
