Hi, I have a question about the 2006 tax returns. Currently, my parents have been separated for more than a year. They broke off on very bad terms. I am barely in contact with my dad now. The problem is, I don't know if I'll be able to get my dad's 2006 tax returns by the deadline. He's currently overseas and I'm not sure when he'll be back. What if he comes back in May or June or possibly even later? I already contacted some of my colleges via email but none of them have responded so far. I'm hoping someone here would give me a general idea what would happen? Would I be eligible for financial aid?

Also, do I have to file for financial aid to get student loans or is this a separate issue? My dad will not be paying one penny for my college education. He isn't even paying child support. The day he left, he had the nerve to even take the money saved for my college tuition.

Sorry, I'm new at all of this. I'm tackling this financial aid process as I go along. Any help is appreciated!

For FAFSA, just list your Mom, leave dad's info blank. Profile will likely require Dad's info. Find out which applications your schools require, and when.

Yes- you need to file for aid to get student loans.

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what each college says about this. I hope I won't be rejected for aid because of this. =/

Oh no, I already emailed them my question about not being able to send in the noncustodial parent's 2006 tax returns on time. I'm just saying I'm waiting for their response now.

TODAY check the websites of the colleges you're applying to, and see what their financial aid requirements are. Don't miss any deadlines.

And don't wait for their replies. Take the initiative and find out what the deadlines and requirements are. Today.

The thing is, I think I will miss the deadline. I will be able to submit everything but my dad's 2006 tax returns. On the site, it says I must get into contact with them if I will miss the deadline.

Don't wait for Dad's tax returns, or for Mom's. Check the websites today, find out the deadlines and get your FAFSA and Profile filed ASAP. Use estimates to meet deadlines.

Don't miss any deadlines. There's no need to.
