Question About the CSS Profile...

One of the supplemental questions for Boston College is:
"Is the college authorized to discuss the family's information with the student or to release the family's information to financial aid agencies and scholarship donors providing aid to the student?"
I thought that this was extremely vague and confusing. If I say yes, will too much of my parents' information be freely given out? If I say no, will I lose out on a lot of potential scholarship money? I've been working on this profile forever, and I'm starting to get really frustrated. Any help would be appreciated.

I think if you say no, the door will close to aid. The colleges are legally obligated to make sure that people are eligible for the Federal aid. The colleges are required to audit a certain amount of financial aid applications, including requiring additional information to be submitted. Also, the college may have committees that decide some of their scholarships, and they need to share that information with those committees so you can be eligible for them.

The colleges will not sell your financial info.

I think it is okay. As I read it, signing it would give the college permission to give info to:

 1. The student (you) OR
 2. Agencies and donors that actually give you aid.
