Hi ,
I am trying to major in Computer Science.
Currently, I am studying at Brooklyn College. I am taking 4-5 classes. Two of these classes are electives, music and psychology. The other three is a English class, a Computer Science class, and a class which helps the freshman students get together.
I want to transfer to City College of New York. I got rejected once already when I applied during my senior year of high school. The reason why I want to transfer is because I heard they have an accredited computer science course, which Brooklyn college doesn’t have. Please tell me if I am exaggerating the worth of accredited programs.
Computer science programs can get accreditation from ABET, which is the same organization that accredits engineering programs. ABET accreditation is important in some engineering disciplines, but is generally considered optional in computer science. It’s not something that CS employers normally care about.
If you search for accredited CS programs at abet.org, you will find that many well-known schools don’t have ABET accreditation for their CS programs (although they typically do have ABET for their engineering programs). In NYC, for example, the CS programs at Columbia, NYU, and Fordam are not ABET-accredited.
Bottom line: I think you may be exaggerating the worth of programmatic accreditation in computer science. I would not recommending transferring from one CS program to another just to get ABET accreditation.
I have another reason, which I didn’t initially mention.
There’s an elective there that is 3 semesters long and I really want to take it. Just for those electives, I will probably transfer.
But I really do appreciate your recommendation. I will not transfer for just accreditation anymore. Accreditation will just be bonus.
Do you know if theres a high chance of me getting accepted if it’s from CUNY to CUNY?
