Question about Tulane e-mails

My daughter has received several e-mails from Tulane saying they havent heard from her about Destination Tulane blah blah. We signed up for one of the Honors weekends. The e-mails are concerning me for 2 reasons. 1. Since she has applied for the DHS and the CS scholarships, I want the school to know that she is interested. The fact that they keep saying they havent heard from her has me imagining a list of "not interested" students that they put in front of the judges with her name on it. 2. the e-mails are getting on my nerves. Probably because of the above. Any thoughts?

My son is getting the same emails and has also registered for the Honors Wkd. He did let his admissions counselor know that he was planning to attend the Honors Wkd but the emails keep coming. Last week a paper invite came. It does make you wonder if the University thinks the students are uninterested if they don’t schedule for a Destination Tulane date.

It is a little disappointing that they don’t cross-reference their lists better, but I know they do keep a file of all contacts with a student, including that they signed up for Honors Weekend. More precisely, they keep a list in the student’s file of all the contacts, visits, and scheduled visits. Certainly they know that they have applied for the top scholarships, which is taken as a strong sign of interest.

I wouldn’t worry, the program is just automatically sending material to all those accepted students that didn’t sign up for Destination Tulane. In fact, I wonder if it a flaw that came up when they went to a new system, because I haven’t heard this particular complaint the last couple of years. I know it is annoying, but I wouldn’t worry about it as far as how the school perceives the applications for scholarships. You have alerted them, that should be sufficient. Besides, I bet most students that are invited to the Honors Program are going to Honors Weekend instead of Destination Tulane, if they are going to visit at all. So most will be in the same situation with Tulane and the e-mails.

Thanks Fallenchemist. In the rational part of my brain, I came to those conclusions myself. Its the non-rational part that sends me a bit south. Anyway, about the fact that Tulane keeps track of all the contacts with students, that thought sends me into a fit of the vapors! Not long ago my daughter was accepted into UM and offered a similar scholarship to Tulanes and was also invited to compete for their full tuition scholarship called the Singer. I was aware of this scholarship but when I went onto the Miami CC board there was talk of another scholarship that I had never heard of that my daughter wasnt invited to compete in. There was a lot of confusion and speculation on the board (no Fallenchemist or JYM to ask) so naturally I had to get to the bottom of it immediately! Typed into google her admission reps name + University of Miami to get the number of her admission rep. Called and asked about the scholarship. He knew nothing about it, was very curious and said he would investigate it. I hung up and looked at my screen and realized I had called Tulane. The Tulane admission reps name(that was my big error) + University of Miami had Tulane come up at the top of the list, because he covers the Miami area I guess. Anyway, very embarrassing. I e-mailed him and told him of my error. I hope that particular contact wasnt recorded!

My daughter also is receiving emails an dmail from different offices at Tulane asking her to come visit. The one that is particularly maddening id the one from MR. RETIF asking in the email to let them know her status about attending. She answered the first one that she was considering Tulane and checked off what she wanted more information about. Since then, she has received 4 additional emails asking the same thing and stating they have never heard from her. She is considering going to honors weekend in APril and now keeps getting mail and email about Tulane Destination. I told her to ignore all of the email/mail and just communicate with her admissions person.

Bottom line, I just emailed Mr. Retif and explained this to him and asked that she be removed from his email/mail distribution list.

I’ll let everyone know if I get a response from him and/or if the communcations stop.

All the e-mails about whether or not she was going to attend is what I remember most. My D also found it annoying, but I do understand how difficult it is for Tulane (or any school save Harvard and a few others) to know what kind of yield they are going to have, and how critical this is. After all, 100-200 more matriculators than they planned and dorm space gets very tight (especially if that happens again this year) while 100-200 less than they planned is problematic the other way, for obvious reasons. The are various jobs I don’t envy others having, and that is one of them! So try and cut them a bit of slack since they are just trying to gauge how many more they can/should accept before the April 1 deadline.

Fallenchemist, I will give them all the slack in the world if they give us the DHS! Im only joking. I understand their concerns. Its just the waiting and uncertainty that has my nerves frayed and I suppose its the same for the other posters. I will sit back and wait patiently for the next 2-3 weeks.

Oh, I understand!! Not that long since we were there also. It is remarkably easier to be the voice of calm and reason now, lol. I guess the only thing that made it a bit easier then than it might have been otherwise was that we knew she had a couple of similar offers in her pocket due to guaranteed NMF and the like, but still it was exactly as you describe because she really wanted either Tulane or WUSTL. Tulane came through, WUSTL didn’t give her the full tuition and there we had it. Not that I was pushing Tulane or anything, of course.

BTW, your Tulane/Miami story had me literally laughing out loud. No harm, I assure you.

Fallenchemist, just a FYI. I still have no idea what that other scholarship was that she didnt get asked for except that its a full ride(room board). I called the school and they told me it was a music scholarship. That appears not to be the case as some of the invitees have no music backround. The lack of info is really astounding. I hate to say it but my daughter really dosent have that much interest. It would be better for us in terms of $ because she would receive the Florida Bright Futures along with the merit $. The Singer seems to be a bit more competetive than the DHS and you have to be invited to compete and they also dont give as many out. I should probably say its more selective not more competetive. Not everyone who gets the top merit award are asked to compete. So there are fewer applicants. Im less confident there. Anyway. Thanks for all your help.

You’re welcome. I know Miami and Tulane compete for a lot of the same students. Miami is quite a bit larger (twice as big?), so if they have even fewer of these Singer scholarships it must be really competitive to get one. College admissions/finances. What a thicket to traverse. I am hoping for a great result for you and my other CC friends.

Thank you for your good wishes.

Sorry to butt in but…

I totally forgot about the honors weekend invitations! I can’t remember right now where I placed my letter, so could anyone please repeat the dates for honors?

I’ve been getting the same emails repeatedly and I also thought that perhaps Tulane would take this as a sign of disinterest. I was concerned, naturally, since I applied for the DHS and I want it  So I signed up for one of the last dates of Destination Tulane. Is it possible to still change my mind and cancel? Or is there a DT date that overlaps with honors?

Oh, and does anyone know if Tulane emails results of DHS to internationals?

Here is the link to everything about the Honors Weekends [url=<a href=“http://admission.tulane.edu/honorsweekend/index.php]Tulane”>http://admission.tulane.edu/honorsweekend/index.php]Tulane Admission: Honors/url. I think there are DT dates all the time, so this probably does overlap.

Tulane sends winners their DHS results by UPS, so if you win you will still get it pretty fast. But they won’t do it by e-mail I don’t think.

If I remember correctly, there are DT dates each Tuesday following the honors weekends, but they are not going on simultaneously. Looking at the program descriptions though, it seems to me that DT would be a bit repetitive after Honors Weekend. Of course, you would get to meet additional perspective students by staying for both.

where did I put my gris gris?
