i may be visiting UCSB soon and was just wondering it its possible to walk around the campus myself with my family around the school or do i have to be in a tour group. does the tour group usually have a lot of people or is it usually just one family.

you can just walk around campus if you want; they're not gonna ask you for your UCSB i.d. card.
the tour group, the one i was in was comprised of different families. but that was the admitted students group, but i dont think it would be different any different if you took a regular tour...

are there often multiple families there cuz i don't really want to be the only one in the tour group. do i just walk in? do i need to register online before. where would i go if registering is at the school

register? as in for the tour? you dont need to. just go to the visitor center. they have a tour monday-friday at noon and 2pm. just go at the times and there should be a tour guide waiting. usually you wont be the only 1 there. but if you are, that could really be good: you can ask all the questions you like. when i went, there were 2 groups, each group consisted of maybe 15 people about 1/2 of which were parents. but with the regular tour, it was maybe 8, most being prospective students. i saw them throughout the my tour but i'm not sure if they're the regular tour group...

You can download a tour podcast UCSB Admissions and DIY :).

Since this is the time most students are trying to make their decision about which school to attend (and therefore going on college tours) I doubt you will be the only family in a tour group. That being said, you should stop by the Visitor Center even if you want to tour the campus by yourself because they should be able to provide you with a map of a self-guided tour around UCSB.

thanks now just a few more questions. where would be the best place to park and where would i go to register for the tour.

You park at the visitor kiosk parking lot. Make sure to print a map of the campus beforehand so this isn't too hard to find. Parking is $2 for an hour, $4 for 2, and $8 for the day. From there, you walk up a little path and your at the visitor center.

thanks its the mesa parking structure near the visitor center right?

As far as I can remember, yes. There should be signs pointing the way to the visitor kiosk, too, if you are confused when you get there.
