Do many kids from the area go home on the weekends? Does it feel like the dorms empty out on the weekends? I'm wondering how an out of stater from New England would find things at UofPitt. Seems like a great school, but that's a concern.

My D was accepted and she knows quite a few students at Pitt. I can say right away that not a lot do go home. We live in the Philadelphia area and it's 5 hours to get to Pittsburgh. A good portion of the students come from the Eastern side of the state as well as OOS so I don't think you are going to find many students going home on weekends.

Most stay on the weekends, even kids who live nearby.

People want to stay on campus for the weekends. There is always so much to do. There are sporting events, parties, events, clubs, and more on the wknds- it's fun. Also, PA is a huge state!! Kids from Philly are not going home so quickly, it's 5 hours away! Would a kid from Boston going to school in NYC go home everywknd? same thing with the kids from PA. Pitt is not a commuter school! There are lots of kids from New England, NJ, etc that attend Pitt. I would not worry about the dorms emptying out. Hope this info helps!

My D is oos, as are all of her friends, pretty much. Not only do they not go home on the weekends, a lot of them don't even go home for Thanksgiving(!). Most of the kids who choose Pitt tend to be kids who love city life and the weekends are when they "go and do" and take advantage of the city. Last year D's roomate was from Ohio, about 2 hrs away from Pittsburgh and she didn't go home until Thanksgiving, altho' I think her parents came in town a few times to see her.
