With such a high percentage of students from NC, does a significant percentage go home on weekends? I am sure that for football and basketball home games the campus is very active but on weekends without a home game does the campus empty out, leaving the OOS behind. An alum friend indicated years back when she attended that was the case but does not know if it still holds true. Thanks

LEDad, My S does not go to UNC but does go to a large state u just down the road. He has many friends from high school who go to UNC and they hardly ever come home for the weekend. Remember, NC is a pretty wide state so even though most students are in-staters many are hours from home. And with so many students, even if a third of them went home every weekend, that would still leave a lot of kids in Chapel Hill.

LEDad: I agree with PackMom.^ They really don't come home on the weekends--at least not the students I know, including my own. ;)

UNC is not a suitcase school these days. As jack said, once they get there they like it so much that they don't go home very often. My OOS son when given the chance to come home often prefers to stay because all his friends are there.

Additionally there is a very strong OOS Students Assn. that sponsors a number of events on long weekends and throughout the year for OOSers to get to know each other and get together.

It has NEVER been a problem for my son who is now a junior.

All my friends at UNC hardly ever go home b/c they don't want to miss anything that happens on campus. UNC is definitely not a suitcase school. ; )

I live in Winston-Salem and go to UNC. I have only been home once this year other than on breaks, and no there is no mass exidous to home on the weekend, there is always something to do.

As everyone else has said, people going home is not an issue at all. so don't worry about it.
