Question: Let’s say your school grants you $1000 in WS. Can you make more than $1000 in WS if you work longer hours?

Just wondering :)

No, you can only earn WS income up to the amount awarded. Sometimes employers may be willing to keep you on as non WS employees if their budgets allow. if that happened the non WS income would be treated as regular income as far as FAFSA is concerned.

Usually you can request that amounts awarded be transferred back and forth between loans & WS. So, if you need more work study ask the dept if they can increase your WS award and decrease loans. Personally my DD has not earned more than about $2500 a year at WS, she works about 10 hours a week, but then takes time off during breaks, mid terms, finals, etc.

She did have a sweet set up with her job wherein she answered the office emails all summer, from afar. So she was able to earn a little money and keep in touch with that office whilst the office staff was doing summer travel meetings

My daughter did do that her first year. She did not think she would be able to earn the full WS (she had an outside job at the time) so had 1/2 the WS converted into a subsidized loan. This, of course, would only be possible if you do not already have the max in subsidized loans. At her school it would be much harder to go the other way - converting a loan into WS - as the WS funds are limited. In fact the reason she turned down 1/2 the WS is because when she asked the financial aid dept about what she should do if she was not going to use the full WS award, they asked that she turn that portion down so they could re award it. They had already awarded all their WS $$$s and had students who would like to have some.

Ooh, thanks. I will probably be doing that :)
