I have a couple questions regarding work study.

1) I am supposed to come up with $1500 per semester through work study. About how many hours per week would that be with an average job?

2) If I find a better paying job off campus, am I correct in thinking it's be better to cancel my work study and just save what I make for the bill?

3) How hard is it to find a job and what's the best way to find one?

Thanks.

I also have $1500 and that usually means I can do up to twenty hours a week, I’m taking a full course load, and with clubs and other activities twenty is too much for me, but that’s how much the university allots for you.

If you find a better job off campus for you then you should take it. However, there are pros for having an on campus job, most of the jobs you never work weekends or nights, and the businesses are willing to work around your schedule, some even let you do homework if you’ve completed all your tasks. However, if you do decide not to take your work study then chances are that you will not be offered work study the following year, this has happened to a number of friends of mine.

I haven’t had too much difficulty finding a job, however I have heard it’s difficult if you have no prior job experience. The best place to go is the website : jobs.ufl.edu and complete an application.

Hope I helped, and good luck!

I second what CGymrek said about the difficulty if you have no prior experience. I’ve applied to a couple of positions and I’ve had no one call back yet.

Does anyone have any tips? I want to earn this work study money!

Onemorerobot, when you applied did you use a resume? If so, and you have no prior job experience what did you use for the resume? I didn’t have much experience before I had a job, but I was able to use volunteer experiences to indicate that I was capable for the position.

i used volunteer experience mostly on mine and had no luck.

Yes, I used a resume and a cover letter. The resume included my volunteer experiences, some which I thought were relevant for the position. I also included school organizations I was a part of, but only those in which I held a position. Maybe they are looking for students with more experience?

I’ll keep trying and hope I get something.

Well, I worked at Allstate over the summer and was a cashier for two years sophomore and junior year, that should help right?
