I recall reading somewhere that colleges that require two recommendations prefer the two teachers to be from different subject areas. My two recommendations are from science (one is an AP Chem teacher, the other is AP Physics B). Do you think this will be a problem for the Cornell application?

P.S.: I plan on majoring in physics, if that changes anything.

Top tier schools, especially liberal arts schools, want their students to excel in all subjects. They want math/science students to write well, and english/history students to be able to do calculus. If at all possible, it is better to have one from math/science and one from english/history teacher.

More often than not, when a school says “prefer,” they mean they “want.” This is for class of 2018.

That’s interesting, because I asked two of my teachers whether or not I should use my AP Lang/Comp teacher for a recommendation, but they said to stick with science and math. I was sure to also tell them that that teacher really loved my work and personality, but they stayed firm with their position.
