In the extra curriculars/work/volunteer experience section of the app it asks “During which high school years were you involved?” and for the transfer app “After 12th” is an option. That is what I’ve been selecting for the things I’ve been involved in after high school. However, the wording confuses me. When, after you select “After 12th”, it asks: “Number of years after 12th” does it mean the number of years you’ve been involved in said activity OR does it mean the number of years after high school it has been since you’ve done this thing.
For instance, if I’m a second year student at a CC (straight out of high school) and I’m interning at an office for just fall 2015, would I write in the box that states “Number of years after 12th” 2 years (since its been two years since I’ve been in high school and have started this thing) or would I write 1 year (since its an internship that started this year)
I’d greatly appreciate any help or guidance as to what you guys did! Thanks!!!
It literally means the number of years after 12th that you started the extracurricular. If you graduated HS in 2014 and started the internship in 2015, then put one year.
It’s really poorly laid out in my opinion. You should clarify how long you will be interning in the comments box to describe each extracurricular.
@goldencub I’m almost positive that is incorrect. They’re asking: After high school, how many years were you involved in this activity?
You think it’s poorly laid out because it doesn’t describe the length of the activity, but that’s actually what the “years” is talking about. Why would they want to know how many years after high school you started when they could know how long you were involved with the activity?
Example: A student graduated high school in 2010 and started at community college in 2011. They were involved in an honor society 2011-2013. “Years after 12th” would be 3.
It is confusing though. I originally interpreted it as you suggested but my TAP advisor said that was incorrect. If you do a google search on “how many years after 12th grade did you begin with this organization,” a surprising amount of hits come up as it is pretty confusing.
Hmmm, I would see it as two years working the activity, although I admit I haven’t looked at the boxes recently. I never saw confusion, so maybe I was seeing both: dates involved (which indicates time frame after hs) and length of commitment.
I originally did mine the way @goldencub suggested, @lindyk8. For me, activities were something like 7+ years “after 12th.” It would also ask how many hours per week and how many weeks per year, but nothing about start or end dates. So using the way goldencub suggested (and, again, the way I originally did), that would only show when someone started an activity but doesn’t really give the bigger picture of how long someone was involved with it.
Either way, it’s confusing. And the unfortunate thing is that depending how one interprets it, it could make an applicant SERIOUSLY misrepresent themselves. The way I originally did it would have me saying I did a specific activity for 7 years … that, of course, assuming I was wrong then and correct now.
I would obviously urge someone to double check for themselves, but I am pretty confident to what I’ve posted above. Regardless, it’s very poorly worded and easy to interpret incorrectly.
I even asked about it to a Berkeley rep at an event at my school and I don’t remember getting a clear answer. It should just ask what the activity is and then you enter in how long you did it for. The end.
