question for fallen chemist and others in the know

I Finally made reservations for destination Tulane and I would like some reccommendations of where to stay. My daughter and I will be going together, and would prefer to be somewhere convenient to the french quarter as well as Tulane. Also somewhat safe and reasonably priced. Thank you in advance!

I’m going to destination Tulane too, and got a hotel on canal street, which is near french quarter. It’s JW Marriott. There’s many Marriotts in the area and they are all very nice.

When is everyone going to DT? I’m going this Monday the 28th

cchopefulmom, it would help to know what days you are needing the room(s).

Park View Guest house is a B&B almost across the street from Tulane.
If you want to stay close to the French quarter, the Loews is well located and very reasonable (and has a great restaurant on first floor).
Any of the “big name” hotels downtown are very good (Marriot, Sheraton, Hilton, Ritz Carlton, the W, etc)
Don’t stay in the suburbs (i.e. Metairie, ) unless you want to drive to Tulane and downtown (or take cabs).

go to hotwire.com and trust any of the hotels you choose. choose a 4 star or better in the “downtown” section or a 3 star or better in the “French Quarter” section. They do not tell you the name of the hotel until after you book but I have always been very satisfied and have used the sight several dozen times in many cities. NO has some of the better deals. they know what you are looking for and they are always very safe.

a lot of the b&bs in the garden district would also be a good bet, most are short walking distance to the street car line on st. charles (which you could use to get up to tulane or to take downtown), in a great area near lots of restaurants, and smack dab in-between tulane and downtown. my friends recently stayed at creole gardens on prytania street during mardi gras and had a good experience.

You have gotten lots of good suggestions. Like ExceptionalSea, I prefer staying on St. Charles in the Garden District, where it is a short streetcar ride to Tulane or to downtown. However, I don’t know what the current or impending streetcar situation is, so that could change everything. But my favorite place for comfort and convenience is the Hampton Inn on St. Charles, and there are a couple very close to that people say are also good like the Best Western. A recommendation made by Tulane Jeff of the admissions office is a place called the The International House [Tulane University Admission Blog - Jeff: My Favorite New Orleans Hotel](Tulane University Admission Blog - Jeff Schiffman: My Favorite New Orleans Hotel) It is downtown, and certainly any of the downtown/French Quarter hotels are fine. Just takes a bit longer to get to campus, but certainly still not too far, only about 4 miles or so.

Have fun!

The Royale O in the French Quarter (next to Napolean House). The street car will be out then, you’ll need a car or taxi/limo anyway.

We like to stay at the Embassy Suites on Julia St. It’s in the central business district between the French Quarter and the Lower Garden District and very convenient. (And they serve a complimentary cooked to order breakfast with great crawfish omelets.)

OK, the crawfish omelets might get me to stay there next time!

Thank you for all of your suggestions. I am planning to come for the April 13 destination tulane. I will be there in the early morning the day before until that night. I do not plan on having a car. Very excited to see Tulane and the surrounding areas. I was there many years ago but my daughter has not. I love all the suggestions you have all given, but what I am asking is, what woud be best for US? Do you think we should stay closer to the quarter, Tulane or in the middle? Thank you all for your help. This board is for sure more active than any of the other colleges my daughter is considering. also ony ideas when the css would be comming out?

CSS will be this week for sure.

Here is what they are saying on the NORTA site:

So it sounds like the part of the line from downtown to Tulane will still be operating, but I would call that number to be 100% sure that is true for the days you are there.

Assuming that is true, I would suggest since you are there for such a short time and you will not have a car, and I would think you would want her to get a feel for the uptown area, that you stay at the Hampton Inn or one of the similarly situated hotels on St. Charles midway in the Garden district. Then you are only looking at a 20 minute, lovely streetcar ride to Tulane. The hotel can store your luggage even if you have to check out. Also then a short ride to the Quarter if you want to take her to see that on the 12th, and eat down there somewhere.

If it turns out the streetcar will not be running in that section during those days, then I suggest you try for a B&B near Tulane so you can walk everywhere. There is the Park View [New Orleans Inn and Bed and Breakfast - Park View Guest House on St. Charles Avenue Streetcar line in Uptown](http://www.parkviewguesthouse.com/) and Mandevilla [Mandevilla Bed and Breakfast](http://www.mandevilla.com/) Those are the only two close to campus I know about. If they work out then you can either eat uptown at Jacques-Imo’s or Dante’s Kitchen or a number of other places, or head on downtown to eat there. Or pick from dozens of other amazing choices.

If the B&B’s are full (and again this is if the streetcar will be down) then pick one of the downtown hotels and just get a taxi back and forth. Since you are there for only two days and one night it won’t make a huge difference either way, but if the streetcar is running it is a great way for her to get an immediate feel for part of life at Tulane. That’s one reason I like the Garden District hotels on St. Charles.

Rent a car instead of a taxi. It will be cheaper. The taxi fare from the airport to your hotel and back, plus a taxi to and from your hotel and campus will cost more. And you have the conveinence of your own car. When we visited a few months ago, there were no taxis out in front of Tulane, so you probably will have to wait as well.

Yes, but be warned: parking is very difficult at Tulane. We usually have to park 3 to 10 blocks away and hike in.

Take a look at Tulane’s travel portal [Tulane University - Travel Portal](Tulane Portal – Campus Travel Management) for discounts at hotels. Also, this hotel https://www.facebook.com/pages/Maison-St-Charles-Hotel-Suites/100988080053</a> will give you a discount if you mention you saw them on facebook. I’ve not stayed there , but it looks charming.

Also, to address NervousParent’s point about taxis at Tulane, they have a spot at the corner of Willow and McAlister, near Butler dorm and the Reilly Center. So while they are not “in front” of Tulane, they are nearly always there on campus.

I personally prefer not to have a rental car for a 2 day/1 night visit, but to each their own of course.

Ahh, here is where we differ, though it depends onwhere one is staying. Its easy to rent a car for very little $$. I just rented a HErtz for an upcoming trip to NOLA for $18/day. THats cheaper than a taxi, even with the junk fees added on. If you stay in the Quarter, you’ll pay for parking, but still, IMO having the car gives you flexibility.

Oh, I agree it is cheaper to rent a car, I just don’t like the hassle, especially for such a short stay. I mean one would still want to take the streetcar up and down the line at least once because that is an important part of the NOLA experience, and walk through Audubon Park, up and down Magazine Street, and of course there is the time on campus. With only half a day the 12th (by the time one lands, gets luggage, and gets to the hotel), that night, and the next day at Tulane and then to the airport, the car is going to just be parked the vast majority of the time. Just not my thing to have to fool with driving in an unfamiliar city for such a short time, but I fully acknowledge that others often feel differently.

Hi -

We just came back from Destination Tulane - we stayed in the Roosevelt Hotel near the French Quarter and it was perfect. We had originally had reservations in a 3* hotel in the Garden District but it was very moldy so we immediately checked out…thanks to our smartphones and Expedia, we were able to get the Roosevelt (5*) for about the same price on a last minute deal.

We took a taxi to Tulane = $12. Taxi to Ariport - $32 each way.

It costs upwards of $40 per day to park in any of the hotels downtown.
