question for fallen chemist and others in the know

Whoa-- I’ve paid to park in the downtown hotels and it was $28-30/day. This trip we probably will stay somewhere else, so will watch the parking fees (many of the hotels on St Charles have free parking). Also, in the past DS didn’t have a car, but this semester he does. We like the convenience of getting wherever we want to go, so tend to rent. Its a habit I guess.
$12 cab was cheap. Did you share with others? I thought it was usually around $14-15.

Hopefully I will decide on my accommodations tomorrow. Thank you all so much for your help. I will reiterate that the Tulane thread is the most active and informative of all the schools my daughter is considering. Thanks again!!! I will let you all know how everything works out.

Strongly agree. And it actually is 100% the Tulane Forum’s help that helped me making up my mind going to Duke. People here are awesome!

Thanks, guheng. Nice choices to have!

jym626 - The taxi’s meter was turned off and he just told me it was $10 so I gave $12. I did not have a car however I did take notice of a couple of signs as we walked by re: parking…D and I always look because she has been totally “shellshocked” at how much it costs to park since receiving her license…good lesson for public transportation! The parking costs from what we saw (maybe we just the two most expensive deals in New Orleans) but they were on par with what we see in Boston.

If D ends up at Tulane, then we will have the opportunity to learn more about the area.

BTW- Tulane is awesome - I actually think it is a perfect fit for D2, I am not sure that D1’s program is right for her.

You got a good deal with the taxi!! IIRC, my s usually finds someone else at the airport when he lands and they share a taxi, and I though it cost $14-15 apiece. Thats from memory, and of course I can’t rely adequately on my aging memory!!

Agree downtown parking is outrageous-- in any city. If my s and friends go to the French Quarter, they usually take a cab. Ends up easier and cheaper and no one is the designated driver…

sorry, typo! I meant it’s the Tulane forum that helped me to make my mind up going to Tulane instead of Duke…

whoa. guhengshuo. Tulane over Duke? awesome…Green Wave!

There really are a surprising number of students that pick Tulane over higher ranked schools, including Ivies. Sure, a lot of times it is the money (and nothing wrong with that!), but it is also often the programs Tulane offers, such as in this case but also many other types of programs, the location, the vibe, and very often some combination of all of these. I think it makes for a really dynamic mix.

We had a wonderful time in New Orleans. Just to let you all know, we stayed by the french quarter in La Quinta, it was nice, clean and centrally located. Spent one day touring the city and the next day took the street car to Tulane. The street car went all the way from the french quarter to Tualne without any need to transfer for the bus or anything. It could not have been more convienient. We had a great time and really loved Tulane. Alas my daughter wants to go in a different direction and will not be attending Tulane. Still, it seemed like a great school in a great location. Thank you all for all of your help and advice. Good luck and best wishes to all!

Whatssa matta with that girl?? LOL. Best of luck to her, she must have found a really great fit somewhere else.

Good luck to your daughter, cchopeful. We are in NOLA as I type, for a little vacation and early 21st birthday celebration for DS, whose b’day is in the middle of finals! Meals so far (feeding ds and friends) were at Dantes Kitchen (wonderful), The Pelican Club, jazz and drinks on Bourbon Street, where there were a few impromptu parades (one of pirates and then a wedding procession) and I caught 2 sets of beads (and no I didnt have to do anything to earn them, lol).

Yesterday we saw the Audobon zoo and WWII museum (where I found a friends father’s photo, took a cellphone picture and emailed it to her- she had never seen that photo before) and will go back to catch the 4D movie.

Today is Crawfest on Tulane’s campus, so we will have more food and music. Then Dinner at Dick and Jenny’s. Tomorrow is the segway tour (my Dh wants to do this!) and diner at Upperline. Yesterday we also bought a very yummy birthday cake from a french bakery on Magazine street.

And the weather is perfect too. A very brief sprinkle while at the zoo, but otherwise gorgeous!

Oh-- and every place is very happy to celebrate a 21st birthday!

Sounds really great! Happy Bday to your very fine son. He is now legal (well almost), as if that made a difference, lol.

Thanks. He is truning out to be a pretty good kid…er… adult (almoost)!

Jym26 - went to crawfest today too! Seems like a lot of work for a little bit of yumminess, but I get that it is more about the experience…kind of like crabs in my neck of the woods! Spoke to a mom with an admitted, yet undecided student about how much we love, love, love Tulane! My S and his friends spoke to the kid and hopefully he was sold! Did you hear press Cowen speak this weekend? Some really interesting stuff which I will post later.

I am so, 1000%, completely envious of u2 getting to go. I am “stuck” in Toronto on business and it was about 38 degrees and driving, pouring wind and rain all day. Ugh.

I am sure we are all looking forward to your report, 3bysmom.

Gorgeous day today, wasn’t it, 3bysmom? Had a great time at Crawfest, though I only ate a few crawfish. All I have been doing since we got here is eat! I can’t wait for your report, as I didn’t hear Cowen’s talk. We went back down to the WWII museum to see the 4D movie, and then took DS to Wal Mart to fill up the house fridge before finals.

At dinner, we overheard a girl and her parents talking to some other Tulane students. Apparently one of the students had been their tour guide, and the girl had just paid her deposit. All I heard was that they were from Montclair, NJ.

So, Nicholas Cage managed to get himself arrested down in the French Quarter at 6:30 this morning. Always something going on here… :)

Looking forward to yoru report, 3bysmom.

According to President Cowen this weekend;

There were 38,000 applications for 1450 spots (down from 44,000 last year due to adding a mandatory essay)

They will accept 2500 fewer students this year but, the yield is set to exceed all expectations

Tulane received the third largest number of applications of any private US institution this year

So how do you make an impression out of all those apps? #1 VISIT TULANE, #2 Attend a hometown/school admission event #3 In your essay, really get across why Tulane is the school for you (ie: no generic essays)

Good to know he agrees with us! LOL.

So that means the acceptance rate will be about 22.5%, and if they got a yield of 17% they would have 1450 matriculate.

Thanks FC! I knew I could count on you for the math!
