Hey, I’m a junior this year and I plan on applying to BC in the fall. This year sounds like it was insanely hard to get in, and I’m sure next year will be the same if not harder.

My question is, do any of you guys know how important satII’s are for admission? I was under the impression they were just used for placement and when I saw it was an admissions factor on collegeboard.com I got pretty nervous. Michigan is my first choice and they don’t require II’s, so this changes my test taking plans

I’m certainly no shoe-in at BC (3.9UW, 1410/2160, jesuit hs, hard courseload and solid but not unbelievable ec’s), but I’d like to do my best to get in. So, exactly how important are the II’s?

ok well i don't think they play a big role because i had a 3.85uw 5.9192w 3/550 rank and 1260/1910 and only a 660math1 590math2 so i wouldn't sweat it. but is is EXTREMELY competitive. 28,000 apps this year. make sure you are very well rounded and have really good essays.

thats what scares me, that admissions seem so random. you see people with like 2200's and well rounded get rejected and then (no offense SP) people with much lower sat's get accepted.

Yes. I agree that it can be REALLY random. But here is some other stuff that I did that may have helped. My principal wrote a letter of recc. i had 2 alum. write letters of recc. BC doesn't offer alum interviews so this may have stood out. my grandma made a contribution to the bc fund and wrote a letter. i think all of this combined with my high gpa/rank helped. where are you located??? because i think that plays a HUGE factor when you see the people with 2200's get denied. most of those people are in the NE area...im in FL so i think that was a guge + anyways good luck and if i can help anymore let me know

Yeah metfan I'm from NE Pennsylvania so I'm in a similar situation. Hopefully some Jesuit connections from my high school and the fact that my dad went to law school at BC can help a little.

yeah i got in and i had a 570 and 600 on my II's so I don't think they're that big a deal because there are so many other factors. but yeah this year 28,000 applicants 2,250 accepted have fun next year.

i believe BC uses SAT II's as placement for classes, i'd venture out to think that SAT II's might be used for placement into their honors program, but thats just a hunch.

I was placed into honors program.
I'm not sure if it had anything to do with my SAT II's, but just in case anyone wants to know, my scores were: 720, 720, 640, 630. Not great, but perhaps good enough? I'm sure there were many many applicants with II's better than mine. I'd venture to say they're not too important.
Wish I could be of more help! Good luck!

I swore to myself I was not going to look at BC threads anymore, but I admit the chances ones still catch my eye. It breaks my heart when I see people tell rising seniors that if they get their SATs up over 2000 they'll likely get in, or that your scores only have to be high if you're from the NE corridor. It simply isn't true. My D was rejected with over 2200 and we are from the South. Be assured her other stats are well within the range of those who were admitted. So please, do not give kids a false sense of hope on these boards because it might lull them into thinking they can put less than 100% into their application or consider themselves as good as in at BC and later lead to heartbreak.

In reflecting on D's app, I would guess the missing link might have been community service as she only volunteered in two organizations and didn't stress that in her app. We will never know why they didn't like her app though so speculation is useless.

But the point is, do not become complacent or think of an SAT over 2000 as a ticket into BC or any other school because it isn't. Work hard, don't assume any school is a safe bet regardless of what you get your SAT up to, and most importantly, as the mantra here goes... love thy safety because it's very very possible you might end up there no matter how great a student you are.

Yes, the process really is random....I had basically no community service, no religious involvement, nothing like that, and I still got in and got into the honors program.

My best advice to anyone is to be sure that they have a good mix of reach-match-safety schools, and to put in 100% effort to each application. I think that some kids flake out on their apps to their second or third or whatever choice schools, and that is a huge mistake, especially if you are like me and applying to 8/9 schools with a less than 30% acceptance rate.
