Question for those taking Hebrew.

How difficult is it? I can only read it without any understanding. (And I'm not super at that) Currently I'm signed up for Latin.

NOOO TAKE HEBREW HEDDA = AMAZING
are you my facebook friend yet? it would be easier to talk to me that way. ummm pm me and i'll send you the link.

um just in case anyone else is wondering:
Hebrew at UVA is pretty awesome. It goes 101/2, 201/2, 301/2, and then 493/4 which is indep study if you still have time to do it your 4th yr. The class is restricted to 20 people so you're best friends with all of them by the end of the first semester. It assumes you have no knowledge of any Hebrew...

I took Hebrew for a year in high school (plus all of the stuff you do for your bar/bat mitzvah in 7th grade of course, I mean learning words and reading paragraphs for comprehension and verb conjugation and stuff). Literally for the 1st month all I did was never study and help other people learn the letters... You learn script and print at the same time... Of course you generally read without vowels.

The teacher is Hedda, she is AMAZING like I said. She is pretty young and really energetic and draws funny cartoons on the board, brings in pictures and Israeli music... It is also not Jewish based (there are quite a few non-Jewish people in the class). You learn a lot about the culture through the book.

It is a little overwhelming if you have never taken it before I would imagine but it has been amazing for me... I never really have to study for the tests, they are all take home and if you do the homework (btw, she doesnt take off points if you turn it in late) you will be able to do well on the tests. On the other hand I know quite a few people really struggling - they are all the non Jewish ones though I'm pretty sure though. Maybe 1 or 2 Jewish people struggling.

The only downsides are... 1. It is 5 days a week and you can't miss more than 3 classes or your grade starts dropping. 2. There are these horrible language lab things but if you don't do them your grade doesn't drop that much. 3. She gives oral midterms.

Compared to the upsides (all take home tests, great classmates and great teacher, I do not think it is as intense as the other languages as far as we can turn in our homework late and not get in trouble etc...) then it's pretty great. I really recommend if you are interested that you do it.
