hey only a junior now but starting to look at colleges and very impressed with georgetown for what i want. id like to major in international affairs or something similar (at the SFS at georgetown preferably) and eventually do international law.

White Male

Very competitive school (Moorestown High School), no class rankings
GPA: 3.7 unweighted
3.998 weighted (out of 5 with A in an AP class)
All classes honors and AP except spanish and Math which i get As in.
GPA may go down a little this year because my AP physics class is very very hard and the rest of my classes are as well, but its a very hard courseload.

SATs: havent taken yet, should do well though
SAT II: US History 740
AP: US HIstory 4
a lot more after this year

ECs: Hebrew school from 1st grade to current (postconfirmation)
Honor and Service Society
Varsity Bowling
Volunteer at library over summer
JV Volleyball
Work at synogouge on sundays as a teacher's assistant with special ed kids
Write articles for local newspaper

i know its not a ton of info
but any idea as to my chances as of now?

i was also wondering if this would be a good essay to write (not sure if a jesuit school would like it or not :) about how my grandmother was in Auschwitz and grandfather a Lithuanian POW and how their stories and my trip to Hungray influence my view of the world.

"Hebrew school from 1st grade to current (postconfirmation)"

You mean Sunday school, right? Why would you take Hebrew school after your Bar-Mitzvah? That is the whole point of Hebrew School, and I didn't think they had Hebrew school for kids that already had their Bar-Mitzvah. Anyhow, is this really an EC?

its something i do out of school...and its an intelectual event. i dont see how its any less than being in a club at school accept its private. you can stop at your bar mitzvah but you can go on to confirmation and now postconfirmation which are more discussion and less learning.

I didn't know that. Where I live there is a Sunday school for every Sunday until you are about 16 and get confirmed which teaches you about Judaism and a Hebrew school once you get about 11 or so to start preparing for your Bar-Mitzvah and learn Hebrew. Interesting. Are you Reform, Conservative, or Orthodox? Sure, I'd say that is an EC though. As for your chances, I'd say pretty decent right now. You'd have to take the SAT I for me to truly judge though.

yeah im taking the SAT I in december for the first time since 7th grade (got a 550 math 500 verbal then but that means nothign really lol). do you have any good methods to study? my mom (who is a HS counselor, but a new one...used to do elementary school) said that she heard prep courses werent very useful. as far as my hebrew shcool, up until 7th grade (bar mitzvah) it was learning judaica and hebrew, after that until 10th grade it was confirmation, and now its much more of a relaxed sociable atmosphere where we discuss current issues and philosophy. im light on ECs so i figured it couldnt hurt. im a reform jew btw =)

any other opinions?
lets just say for the hell of it: Math - 780 Crit - 750 Writing - 740 = 2270

I'd say that your pretty well off you get that SAT score. Your EC's are a bit weak, but suffice. Your GPA is a bit low but suffices also. And that SAT I would be pretty good. Sometimes I forget what college people are considering because I am always thinking about the absolute top tier schools like Columbia, Princeton, Yale, etc. With a good essay, recommendations, SAT, GPA, EC's, etc. I'd say you are ok-good.

p.s. Here is this:

thanks, i think i did pretty well on PSATs and i feel confident with all the SAT material...well see. this is really the only place i REALLY want to go and if i cant get in im not sure where to look :

for ECs, what else could i do starting now? would volunteering at like habitat for humanity or something like that strengthen it?

also would that essay i mentioned at bottom of original post be helpful or hurt if it was very well written (im good with essays)?

any other opinions?

final bump...anyone?
