Question-Life insurance beneficiary and FAFSA

Hi, I had a quick question and didn't know where to turn.

I'm a sophomore in university, and in September, I had a very close relative who passed away of cancer. She had a life insurance policy I was the direct beneficiary of so I got $140,000. Her intention for this policy was so that I could pay for school.

I'm filing the FAFSA anyway because I figure it can't necessarily hurt (though I anticipate having to pay out of pocket for all expenses and am prepared for that as well).

I just had a question about how to report the life insurance I received. I am not filing taxes because I'm being claimed as a dependent and I made under $6,100 last year in income but I was wondering if the life insurance policy would be counted as "Student's Other Untaxed Income or Benefits" on question 45i of the FAFSA.

I already reported how much I have in my checking account, as well as savings and two CD accounts (all of the money in these accounts is from the insurance payout). I'm just wondering if I have to state the insurance as "untaxed income" as well, or if it would be redundant.

Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you!

I don’t believe an inheritance is considered income. It is an asset if it is in your accounts.

I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong.
