I think I might be interested in a career in accounting, but I know that UC SC does not have an accounting major, what major should you take if you want to be an accountant? And does anyone know how many accounting class are offered in Santa Cruz? Thanks in advance! =)

My suggestion would be BME.

There are two lower division accounting classes which are segments of a two part series. I’m not exactly sure about upper division but I would imagine there are more.

Business Management Econ would be the closest thing you can get to accounting, you have to take the Accounting series for the major and I know of a handful of people who plan on getting their CPA and are doing BME to get there.

Individual Major

Go with Business Management Econ as others have said. I’ve heard great things about their Accounting, ask the adviser about it. Good luck, I know what it’s like to go for a finance job like that in the artsy-fartsy, anti-corporate environment of UCSC; I’m going for an Actuary or some other insurance job. I hope it works out for you, Accountants are so hot.

If you are interested in accounting, then go towards the Business Management Economics major. You are required to take 2 lower-division accounting courses( financial and managerial accounting) for the major and after that you can take the more “accounting” route for your remaining upper-division courses.

There are courses such as corporate finance, cost accounting, intermediate accounting, auditing, advanced accounting, income tax acct, and more finance/acct courses. The schedule depends on the quarter, so you can look online or check the econ department to plan your schedule accordingly.

Just confirming what everybody else is saying. I’m transferring in this year as a Business Management Econ. major and I’ll be taking the upper-division accounting series.
